02 / Roots need room

Choose the container.

Begin with drainage and a stable home. Decoration can follow.

Make room for roots & water

Use a container with drainage holes and a potting mix intended for container plants. Dense garden soil can be difficult to manage in a pot. Choose space for the herb's expected growth rather than fitting a mature plant into the smallest available vessel.

Small pots tend to dry quickly. A larger pot may buffer moisture changes, but its filled weight also matters on a balcony. Check building rules and permitted loads before adding heavy planters; keep access routes clear.

Plant with care

  1. Check that the holes are open. Place the pot where water can drain without dripping onto neighbours or walkways.
  2. Ease the plant out without pulling its stem. Set it near its previous planting depth and settle mix gently around the root ball.
  3. Water the mix to settle it, allow excess water to escape, and check the plant again as it establishes.

A decorative outer pot can hide standing water. Lift the inner pot to check after watering or rain. Group plants by their care needs; start mint separately from thyme.
