07 / Leave room for regrowth

Pick & observe.

A useful harvest can be small. Keep enough healthy leaves on the plant.

Let the plant establish

Begin with modest picking from healthy, actively growing plants. Snip leaves or soft stems as appropriate to the species, leaving foliage and growing points. Wait for recovery before picking again; a stressed plant needs care before another harvest.

See the plant-specific notes for basil tips, mint shoots and thyme sprigs. No fixed yield or picking interval applies to every pot.

Keep the notes useful

Record what you can actually observe: where the pot sits, whether the mix was damp, recent weather, new growth and what you changed. A photo can help you compare your own plant over time; this site does not present photographs or growth results.

  • If a plant declines, check light, moisture and drainage before changing several things at once.
  • Look under leaves as well as at shoot tips. Describe marks or insects before seeking a diagnosis.
  • Use local extension guidance for persistent problems; a short general note cannot identify every cause.
